As a dentist, I often see a common trend among young adults aged 22 to 28: skipping regular dental checkups once they’re no longer covered by their parents’ dental insurance. Unfortunately, by the time many return to my chair, they’re surprised to hear they’re showing early signs of gum disease or have developed cavities.
If you’re in this age group, you’re not alone – but it’s important to understand why regular dental care is critical, even when you’re feeling no pain or discomfort.
Gum disease doesn’t always start with pain. Instead, it often begins silently, with plaque and tartar building up between your teeth and along your gumline. When left untreated, this buildup can lead to:
Gingivitis – The early stage of gum disease, causing red, swollen gums that may bleed when you brush or floss.
Periodontitis – A more advanced stage that can damage the tissue and bone supporting your teeth, potentially leading to tooth loss.
One of the most common misconceptions is that dental problems always hurt. But the truth is, pain is often a late-stage symptom. Gum disease, cavities, and even infections can progress significantly before discomfort begins. By the time you feel pain, more extensive – and costly – treatments may be needed.
When I’m out and about, I sometimes see young people with smiles that show clear signs of skipped cleanings. Stains, swollen gums, or visible tartar are tell-tale signs of neglect. But it doesn’t have to be that way! With routine care, your smile can stay bright and healthy for years to come.
Here are some tips to protect your teeth and gums during this pivotal stage of life:
Prioritize Regular Cleanings – Make a habit of visiting the dentist every six months, even if you’re on a tight budget. Many dental offices offer payment plans or discount programs for young adults.
Brush and Floss Daily – Use a fluoride toothpaste and floss to remove plaque before it hardens into tartar.
Eat a Balanced Diet – Limit sugary snacks and drinks, which feed the bacteria that cause plaque.
Don’t Wait for Pain – If something doesn’t feel right – such as bleeding gums or tooth sensitivity – schedule an appointment. Early treatment is key!
Your 20s are a time of building habits that will serve you for life. By staying on top of your oral health now, you’re investing in a confident, healthy smile for the future.

I’m from New Mexico in California for a family reunion. I broke a crown called Quality Dentistry, they were able to take me in. Upon arrival they were very friendly and attentive. Natay was AMAZING very friendly explained what she was going to do and replaced the crown. If I lived here I would make Quality Dentistry my permanent dentist.

I started going to Dr Wong at Quality Dentistry in the early 2000’s and I’ve never wanted to change dentists. This practice keeps up with technology and hires qualified, friendly and professional staff members. I always know that my comfort and well being is #1 during any procedure I might have including a simple teeth cleaning process. I highly recommend this dental office.

I have been going here for 20years now! I absolutely love it. I enjoy getting my dental cleanings. My last hygienist had retired and now I have a new favorite hygienist, Rochelle. She and her assistant Julie are so kind and funny. Both super gentle and thorough with explaining things. Dr. Wong (Dale rd) and Dr. Du (Tully Rd) are the dentist I see and they’re awesome. Great chair side manners as well. Both offices have nicest staff and very clean rooms. My husband left his other dentist when we got married and now he always recommends Quality Dentistry to his side of the family.
