As a parent you may be wondering, “What is the ideal age to take my child in for their first dental visit”? This is a tricky question to answer because every child is different, they all grow at their own rate and have their own unique needs. The ADA recommends bringing your child in within six months of getting their first tooth, but no later than their first birthday.
What your child’s first dental visit looks like
Your child’s first visit with us is all about their comfort. We show them the instruments we’re going to use, the chair and lights, and introduce them to the doctor and assistant. If your little one is OK with it, we’ll even do a quick look at their mouth and teeth. From there, we’ll polish ( “prophy” ) their teeth. As parents we appreciate that new experiences can be scary, so if at any time your child is overwhelmed we can give them their space and try again at their next visit.
Afterwards they get their very own prize and they get to play in our guessing game.
Regardless of what we accomplish during their first visit, our goal is to create a positive, pleasant and fun experience which will help to create a lifetime of good dental habits.
